Microsoft Authenticator App

Microsoft is moving away from Email and Text message Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) because it’s insecure. They are forcing users to use other means of Authentication, like the Microsoft Authenticator app. You probably don't have to log into your Atelier Ten Microsoft account often, so it could be confusing when you get a notification requiring you to install an app you don’t have, to complete your log in. This is a tutorial on how to Install and configure the app.

Note: This can also be done on the Google Authenticator App.

Visit your Device's App Store

Open the App Store on your mobile device. If you're using an iPhone, go to the Apple App Store. If you're using an Android device, go to Google Play.

Search for "Microsoft Authenticator"

In the search bar, type "Microsoft Authenticator" and press enter.

Google Play Store

Apple App Store

Install the App

Find the Microsoft Authenticator app in the search results and tap "Install" (for Android) or "Get" (for iOS) to download and install the app. Make sure you’re installing the correct one, as seen in the images above. There might be “Sponsored” versions or copycats in your search results. It should be towards the top of the search results and have millions of downloads.

Configure the Microsoft Authenticator App

1. Open the App once the app is installed, tap on its icon to open it.

2. Sign in with Your Microsoft Account, which will be your work email (firstname.lastname@atelierten.com). If you are not already signed in with your Microsoft account, tap "Begin" or "Add account" and enter your Microsoft account credentials.

Note: You don’t necessarily have to use your work email for this account. You can use a personal account, especially if you’re going to be using the app to authenticate other things besides work related stuff.

3. After signing in, tap the "Add account" button at the top of the app.

Choose an Account Type

   - Work or school account: If you want to set up your work or school account, choose this option.

   - Personal account (e.g., Outlook, Hotmail): Select this option if you want to set up a personal Microsoft account.

4. Scan a QR Code or Enter a Code Manually: Depending on your choice, you can scan a QR code provided by your organization (work or school account) or enter the code manually. If you're setting up a personal account, you'll receive a notification on your device to confirm the addition.

If it asks you to input a code twice, it’s asking for the code in the image below. That code resets after 30 seconds, so you need to input the code once, wait for it to reset, then input the second code that shows up.

6. Complete the Setup: Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the setup. This may include configuring your biometric or PIN lock for added security.

Verify Your Identity with the App

1. The next time you log in to your Microsoft account, you'll be prompted to use the Microsoft Authenticator app to verify your identity.

2. Open the Microsoft Authenticator app and tap on the account that needs verification.

3. You'll receive a notification on your device. Tap "Approve" to verify your identity and complete the login process.
